This is one of life's most pressing questions. A majority of Americans say they do not believe that heaven or hell exists; however, the Bible teaches that heaven and hell are real and that each human being will go to one or the other based on his or her relationship with God. Many religions in the world make claims about people's destination after death; however, only the Bible reveals the truth about where people go after they die. With the stakes so high, you need to be concerned about your eternal destination. Please consider four propositions concerning the subject of eternal life:
1. The Bible teaches that every person is guilty of breaking God's Law:
Romans 3:23 . . . for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
Ecclesiastes 7:20 For there is not a just man on earth who does good and does not sin.
James 2:10 For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all.
Romans 3:10-11 As it is written: "There is none righteous, no, not one; 11There is none who understands; There is none who seeks after God."
When the Bible states that everyone has sinned it simply means that we all "miss the mark" when it comes to measuring up to God's holy, perfect, and sinless nature. The problem is that none of us can do anything to make ourselves measure up to God's perfect standard. We are all sinners in thought, word, and deed. That is the bad news, and it gets worse before it gets better.
2. The Bible proclaims that every person will stand before God at the great white throne judgment. On that day each individual's life will be judged based upon his thoughts, words, deeds, and actions. Nothing we have done will escape God's judgment because He knows all things. God is a just judge and will evaluate each person's life against His holy law. The evidence will prove that each person is overwhelmingly guilty when measured beside the perfect, holy standard of God's law. God will pronounce judgment and reveal to each one that the penalty for breaking His law is spiritual death in a terrible place called hell. Once a person dies it is too late to repent from sins and turn to the Savior for forgiveness. Think about what you would say to God on that day.
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death . . .
Hebrews 9:27 And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment.
Revelation 21:8 But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.
Revelation 20:11-15 Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. And there was found no place for them. 12And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. 13The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works. 14Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 15And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.
These verses show us that we are in deep, deep trouble. But there is good news! The gospel of Jesus Christ is the only way to secure the forgiveness of sins, and it comes from God Himself:
3. The Bible assures us that the only hope is found in God's Son—Jesus Christ! He came to earth in human flesh and lived a perfect life. He kept God's Law completely and did not sin, not even once!
Hebrews 4:15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.
Then He died on the cross of Calvary in our place, paying for the sins of the entire world. He rose from the dead the third day, proving He had defeated death and sin. The following verses proclaim the fact that Jesus Christ is the only way of salvation (i.e. to have the forgiveness of our sins and to gain eternal life in heaven).
Acts 4:12 For there is no other name [Jesus Christ] under heaven, given among men, whereby we must be saved.
1 Peter 3:18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit.
2 Corinthians 5:21 For He [God the Father] made Him [Jesus Christ] who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
1 Corinthians 15:3-4 For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures.
4. The Bible tells us that we are faced with a choice: pay for our sins by ourselves or accept God's free gift of salvation through Jesus Christ. You simply admit to God that you know you are a sinner (that you have broken His law and offended Him), change your mind about who Jesus Christ is, and put your trust in Him alone for your salvation! The following verses emphasize that salvation is a free gift from God and there is nothing we can do to earn eternal life or favor with God.
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 4:5 But to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness.
John 6:47 Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me has everlasting life.
John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.
1 John 5:13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.
